Senna is a shrub that grows in India, Pakistan, southern China and many other places. The name is derived from the Arabic word sena and has been used in ancient Indian and Greek medicine since the 9th century. The shrub can grow to about two feet tall, with green stems, pods, and yellow spatular-shaped leaves. Its alternate leaves are evergreen, with four to five pairs of eniculate or obovate grayish green leaflets. Flowers small, yellow, with five clawed irregular petals. The fruit is encased in a rectangular pod about 5cm long. Leaves and pods or fruits are used medicinally.
Functions:
The active ingredient in senna leaves is called senna. The component molecules in the colon are converted by microorganisms to another substance, rhubarb anthranone, which has beneficial effects on stimulating colon activity (which speeds up peristalsis and improves digestion) and increasing fluid secretion. The laxative effect of senatosine and its active metabolite, anthranone rhubarb, are thought to inhibit the absorption of water and electrolyte in the large intestine, thus increasing the volume and pressure of intestinal contents. It stimulates a push - forward contraction of the colon. In addition, stimulation of active chloride secretion increases the content of intestinal water and electrolyte. These changes in the transport of active electrolyte are dependent on calcium in the serosal surface. The laxative effect of sensa is mediated in part by stimulation of colonic fluid and electrolyte secretion, and the secretion capacity is regulated by stimulation of endogenic prostaglandin formation. It can be prepared as an enema or suppository or mixed with a stool softener or a lump of fiber laxative to form a combined laxative.
