China is the world's largest producer of watermelons, but opinions differ on how they came to be. One theory is that watermelon did not originate in China, but in Africa, from the western region, hence the name watermelon. According to the legend, watermelon was found when Shennong tasted Baicao. Its original name is rare melon, which means water, flesh and thin melon, but later it became watermelon.
The popular view is that the native place of watermelon is in Africa. It was originally a wild plant of the orchid family, and later became edible watermelon through artificial cultivation. As early as 4,000 years ago, the Egyptians began to grow watermelons. Later, they gradually moved north, first from the Mediterranean to northern Europe, then southward to the Middle East, India and other places. In the fourth and fifth centuries, watermelons were introduced to China from the western regions, so they were called "watermelons".
According to the Ming Dynasty scientist Xu Guangqi "Nongzheng Quanshu" recorded: "Watermelon, planted in the Western Regions, hence the name." Ming Li Shizhen recorded in the Compendium of Materia Medica: "According to Hu Qiao in Huihe had melon seeds, called watermelon. Watermelon was introduced into China in the Five Dynasties. Today it's north and south. "This shows that watermelon has been cultivated in China for a long time. In the past, Ouyang Xiu of the Song Dynasty was quoted as saying in “Appendix to Siyi Region: History of the New Five Dynasties”: In the Five Dynasties, Tongzhou He Yang County ordered Hu Qiao to enter Qidan to "start eating watermelon". Thus, it seems that watermelon was introduced into China from the Western Regions in the Five Dynasties. In 1981, Hunan People's Publishing House published an extra-curricular book for middle school students called "History of Food, Clothing, Housing and Travel". There is a section about "Watermelon began in the Five Dynasties". Well, that's not exactly true. In the Ming Dynasty, Li Shizhen pointed out in "Compendium of Materia Medica" : Watermelon is also known as cold melon. "Tao Hongjing (People in the Northern and Southern Dynasties) notes that the melon said Yongjia (Jin Huai Emperor) there are very large melon, can be hidden to the spring sound. Before the Five Dynasties, melon species had been introduced into eastern Zhejiang, but it did not have the name of watermelon and did not spread all over China. In addition, in old Beijing, watermelons that went public first were called "water melons" and those that went public later were called "cold melons". This visit to the old farmers, also said that the watermelon is indeed "cold melon" a name. It seems that the above documents and data can be confirmed with Li Shizhen's view. However, Li Shizhen's claim seems to have passed unnoticed for centuries. In 1976, watermelon seeds were found in the silt of the Western Han Dynasty tomb in Guixian County, Guangxi Province. In 1980, the western suburbs of Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, Hanjiang County Han Tomb burial in a watermelon seed, tomb owner died in the first three years of Han Xuandi (71 years ago). This proved irrefutably the reliability of Li Shizhen's records.
