Chinese people have been eating cherries for more than 3,000 years. If lychee is the king of fruits in the eyes of the ancients, then cherries are definitely second to fruits.
Taking Tang Dynasty as an example, the most open period, "lychee" was mentioned 67 times in the “whole Tang Poems”, but "cherry" was mentioned 94 times. Litchi is a legendary fruit out of reach, while cherries are a true delicacy.
Tang people did not eat cherries as "rude" as modern people. They had a unique way of eating cherries. They put the cherry into a bowl with the stone removed, and then added fresh cheese (yogurt) to eat them, sometimes adding syrup to taste them.
Emperors in the Tang Dynasty even regarded cherries as a national honor, giving them to scholars of the Jinshi, and sometimes to famous men of letters.
And intellectuals in the cultural circle also love to show off, so they often praise cherry in their poems, so we can also see cherry refresh more frequently than lychee in "The Whole Tang Poems".
In view of this cultural phenomenon with cherry as the protagonist, our descendants gave it a name, called "cherry system".
Apparently cherries were grown in ancient China, but what about the cherries that were introduced in the late 19th century?
The question is a little complicated. Let's start with the variety of cherries.
Now all the cherries in the world are actually divided into four major varieties.
There are two kinds of cherries native to China. Their scientific names are Chinese cherry and wool cherry.
But there is a problem with Chinese cherries, they are too soft and rotten when ripe. There is a saying that childhood is just like ripe cherries, which can not stand chewing and of course can not stand long-distance transportation.
Fortunately, Chinese cherries are widely grown in China, and the royal family of the Central Plains can still enjoy the delicious cherries. But in modern times, when fruits are sold across regions, Chinese cherries are too delicate to be grown in the market.
So at the end of the 19th century, we introduced a new variety of cherries, called European sweet cherries, whose fruit is much more plump and thick than Chinese cherries, and its taste is very good. It is widely grown in Europe. The cherries that have entered the Chinese market in recent years are imported European varieties of sweet cherries.
